Pilgrims in the Rough

– an unreliable history of St Andrews

What kind of history is this? … A plum pudding kind of history.

No Stones? … Certainly not. Choicest fruit only. A sprinkling of sugar.

But unreliable? … Totally reliable.

There are many histories of St Andrews – an ancient place on the east coast of Scotland, once full of clerics and now of golfers – but none are exactly riveting. I wanted to write a funny one. I wanted to laugh as I went along. As a matter of fact I did laugh. I hope you’ll laugh too.

“An extraordinary book.”

The Observer

“Genuine erudition on history and the tricky business of playing the Old Course.”

The Scotsman

A must-have… combines history, humour and anecdote.
